About Us

The MetroGnomes – Music for the Fun of It!

“The MetroGnomes” is a big band made up of people from various walks of life who just love to play music. The players are from Jessamine and surrounding counties and include both professional and amateur musicians. The players range in age from 20-something to 70-something.

The personnel list includes current and retired band directors, current and retired ministers, music students (some of whom have or do study with Miles Osland at UK), seminary students, lawyers, professors, and educators.

The band’s conductor and musical director is Doug Oatley, a retired music educator and former bass trombone player for Stan Kenton. Doug is a professional musician, composer, arranger, and clinician who brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the band. Click on the Bios page to learn more about the individual players.

The band’s mission is: “To perform music that is fun to play and fun to listen to.”

The band formed during the summer of 2004 and has played 12-15 concerts per year to very positive reviews. Below are some of the comments made about the band by those who have heard them. You may also download MP3 samples from the band’s current play list.

Marilyn Elliott
"The MetroGnomes were the featured band at the first ever Asbury Seminary Couple's Retreat and Dance. The great success of the evening cannot be placed anywhere but at the feet of this quality band who enchanted the evening with a variety of dance tunes. An atmosphere of romance, rhythm, and fun drew out even the least confident couples and the dance floor was full all evening. The MetroGnomes will be the featured band at the second Asbury Seminary Couple's Retreat and Dance next February".James Curnow

"...this is a hot band."

"Wow, what a great group of musicians! There was dancing, clapping, and singing at the Relay For Life. Our survivor's tent was hopping! Guests had nothing but praise for such wonderful tunes and great voices. The range of ages within the group was inspiring. Thanks to the MetroGnomes who played their heart out."Vickie Blevins
